Is Baccarat Rigged? What the Math Says About Losing Streaks

Fair baccarat doesn't need to be rigged. The rules already give the house an edge of 1.06% on Banker and 1.24% on Player, so the game makes money without anyone touching the cards. Most "rigged" feelings come from losing streaks, and those are far more common than people expect: betting Banker every hand, you have about a 67% chance of losing 5 in a row at least once in a single shoe.

That doesn't mean every game anywhere is honest. It means the feeling of being cheated is a poor test for it.

The house edge is already built into the rules

Banker wins 45.86% of hands and Player 44.62%. A Banker win pays 0.95 after commission, and a Player win pays even money. Run those numbers and Banker returns 98.94 for every 100 bet over the long run, Player 98.76. The baccarat house edge post walks through the arithmetic.

A regulated table doesn't need to do anything extra. The edge works on its own, hand after hand.

An honest baccarat game is still a losing game on average. That is how it is designed.

Live dealer and online baccarat: what is different

At a physical table, cards come from a shuffled shoe you can see. In online baccarat with a live dealer, it is the same process on camera. Computer-dealt online baccarat uses a random number generator (RNG) in place of a shoe, and some versions reshuffle every hand.

The math of the hand doesn't change between them. What changes is how much you can see, and who checks the software. Licensed operators are usually audited by independent testing labs. An unlicensed site has nobody checking, and that, not the drawing rules, is where the real risk sits.

Why losing streaks feel rigged

We worked out how often a Banker bettor runs into a losing streak in one 8-deck shoe. Ties are skipped, since a Banker bet pushes on a Tie.

Chart: chance of at least one losing streak in one baccarat shoe betting Banker, 91.32% for 4 in a row, 67.07% for 5, 40.54% for 6, 21.91% for 7 and 11.19% for 8
Chance of at least one losing streak in one shoe, betting Banker every hand (8 decks, about 72 decided hands, Ties skipped)
Chance
At least 4 losses in a row91.32%
At least 5 losses in a row67.07%
At least 6 losses in a row40.54%
At least 7 losses in a row21.91%
At least 8 losses in a row11.19%

So losing 6 in a row in one shoe is close to a coin flip, and 8 in a row happens in about one shoe out of nine. If you play a few shoes a night, a streak that "can't be random" is almost guaranteed to show up.

The brain is bad at this. A run of losses feels like a message, and a run of wins feels like skill. Both are just what random sequences look like. More on this in baccarat streak probability.

Long losing streaks are normal in a fair game. They are not evidence on their own.

What you can check for yourself

The one test that means something is a long record. Over 1,000 decided hands, Banker should win about 50.68% of them, and in a fair game the result lands between about 47.6% and 53.8% roughly 95% of the time. Over 100 hands the range is so wide, about 41% to 60%, that it tells you almost nothing.

A few other checks are simple: the rules shown match the standard drawing chart, the payouts are stated before you play, and the commission is 5% on Banker wins. If a game hides any of those, that is a better warning sign than any streak.

At the start of a fresh shoe every bet has a negative expected value. Only the cards left in the shoe can change that, and only briefly. Betting systems can't.

See the real odds hand by hand

If you want to see what fair odds look like as a shoe goes on, that is what I built Baccarator for.

After each hand you enter the cards and tap Calculate, and Baccarator recalculates the odds and expected value for Banker, Player, Tie, pairs and side bets from the cards still in the shoe. If a bet briefly turns positive, it shows a Kelly sizing suggestion. That only appears when expected value is positive, it is a long-run average, and the next hand can still lose. Positive moments are rare and short. You can choose 6 or 8 decks and practice with virtual chips, with no real money involved.

Is baccarat rigged FAQ

Is baccarat rigged?

A fair baccarat game doesn't need to be. The rules give the house a 1.06% edge on Banker and 1.24% on Player, so it profits without cheating. Losing streaks are normal and are not proof of rigging.

Is online baccarat rigged?

The hand math is identical online. The difference is oversight: licensed games are usually tested by independent labs, while unlicensed ones have nobody checking.

Why do I keep losing at baccarat?

Partly the house edge, partly ordinary variance. Betting Banker for one shoe, you have about a 67% chance of losing 5 in a row at least once.
