Baccarat vs Blackjack: Which Has Better Odds?
If you play blackjack with perfect basic strategy, blackjack has better odds than baccarat: the house keeps about 0.44% of your bets, versus 1.06% on the Banker bet. Baccarat vs blackjack flips the moment you stop playing perfectly. Hit and stand the way the dealer does, and the blackjack edge climbs to about 5.7%.
So the honest answer is "it depends on you." In baccarat, it doesn't.
I build a baccarat odds app, so I spend a lot of time staring at house edge numbers. People ask me this question more than almost any other, and I always end up asking them one back: how well do you actually play blackjack?
Baccarat vs blackjack house edge, side by side
Here is the comparison. The baccarat numbers are exact for an 8-deck shoe. The blackjack numbers come from our own simulation of 200 million rounds per strategy.
| House edge | |
|---|---|
| Blackjack, perfect basic strategy | 0.44% |
| Baccarat, Banker (5% commission) | 1.06% |
| Baccarat, Player | 1.24% |
| Blackjack, basic strategy but never double or split | 2.37% |
| Blackjack, copy the dealer (hit to 17) | 5.68% |
| Blackjack, "never bust" (stand on hard 12+) | 6.34% |
| Baccarat, Tie (pays 8 to 1) | 14.36% |
Blackjack only beats baccarat if you play it close to perfectly.
Look at the gap between the first row and the last three blackjack rows. Same game, same cards, same casino rules. The only thing that changed is the player's decisions.
How much does blackjack cost when you skip basic strategy?
Most people don't play blackjack by the chart. They play by feel, and feel usually lands on one of two habits.
The first is copying the dealer: keep hitting until 17. That sounds safe, because the dealer is the one who wins. But the dealer has one huge advantage you don't copy, which is that you act first. If you bust, you lose even if the dealer busts too. In our simulation, playing like the dealer cost 5.68% per hand. That is more than five times worse than the baccarat Banker bet.
The second habit is "never bust": stand on any hard 12 or higher. It feels disciplined. It cost 6.34%.
Even players who know when to hit and stand often skip doubling and splitting because it means putting more money down. That alone took the edge from 0.44% to 2.37%.
Doubling and splitting are where blackjack players get their edge back. Skip them and the game gets worse than baccarat.
Why baccarat has almost no decisions
Baccarat works differently. You pick Banker, Player or Tie, and then the rules play the hand for you. Whether the Player draws a third card, whether the Banker draws, all of it is fixed by the tableau. You can read the full chart in our baccarat third card rules guide.
That has two consequences.
You can't make a mistake that changes the house edge on Banker or Player. A beginner and a 20-year regular face the same 1.06% on Banker.
And you can't do better than the table either. There is no baccarat version of basic strategy, because there is nothing to optimize except which bet you choose.
In baccarat, everyone at the table faces the same odds. In blackjack, the odds depend on the player.

Remaining cards matter more in blackjack than in baccarat
Both games are dealt from a shoe, so in both games the cards that are already gone change what can come next.
In blackjack, that effect is large enough that the player can change both how much to bet and how to play the hand. That is the whole idea behind card counting there.
In baccarat, the effect on Banker and Player is small. A shoe can drift a little, but it rarely moves those two bets enough to matter. Side bets are different. Some of them, like Dragon 7 or Panda 8, depend on very specific cards, so they can swing a lot more as the shoe runs down. We tested how much in how remaining cards change baccarat odds.
At the start of a fresh shoe, every baccarat bet has a negative expected value. Only the remaining cards can change that, and only for short stretches.
See the baccarat numbers for yourself
If you want to watch this happen hand by hand, that is exactly what Baccarator does. You enter the cards after each hand, tap Calculate, and it recalculates the odds and expected value for Banker, Player, Tie, pairs and side bets from the cards left in the shoe. When a bet briefly turns positive, it also shows a Kelly sizing suggestion. That number only appears when the expected value is positive, it is a long-run average, and the next hand can still lose. Positive moments are rare and short. You can practice with virtual chips, and it never touches real money.
Baccarat vs blackjack FAQ
Does baccarat have better odds than blackjack?
Only if you don't play blackjack well. With perfect basic strategy, blackjack's house edge is about 0.44% under common rules, lower than the 1.06% on the baccarat Banker bet. Without basic strategy, blackjack usually costs more than baccarat.
Is blackjack or baccarat easier?
Baccarat is easier. You only choose a bet, and the drawing rules are automatic. Blackjack asks you to make a decision on almost every hand, and each wrong decision costs money over time.

RTP is 100% minus the house edge. That makes the baccarat Banker bet about 98.94% and the Player bet about 98.76%. Blackjack with perfect basic strategy under the rules above is about 99.56%, but playing like the dealer drops it to about 94.3%.
