Baccarat Natural 8 or 9: What It Means and How Often It Happens

A natural in baccarat is a two-card total of 8 or 9. If either Player or Banker gets one, the hand ends right away and nobody draws a third card. With 8 decks, about 34.3% of all hands end on a natural.

That is more often than most people guess. Here is how naturals work, what beats what, and the exact numbers.

What counts as a natural in baccarat

Only the first two cards count. A 4 and a 5 is a natural 9. A K and an 8 is a natural 8.

A hand that reaches 8 or 9 with a third card is not a natural. It's just an 8 or 9. And 7 is never a natural, even though Player always stands on it.

A natural 9 beats a natural 8, and two equal naturals are a tie. If only one side has a natural, that side wins, because the other side doesn't get to draw.

How often a baccarat natural happens

I ran every possible deal from a full 8-deck shoe.

Naturals in baccarat (8 decks)
Probability
Player gets a natural18.94%
Banker gets a natural18.94%
Both get a natural3.58%
Hand ends on a natural34.30%
Natural tie1.79%

Each side is dealt a natural about 1 time in 5.3. Roughly 1 hand in 3 ends with no third card at all.

Natural 9 and natural 8 are almost exactly as likely as each other, 9.49% and 9.45% for each side.

How much of each side's wins come from naturals

This part surprised me. Banker wins on a natural in 16.26% of all hands, and Player does too, the exact same number. The deal is symmetric before anyone draws.

That means about 35% of Banker's wins and 36% of Player's wins are naturals. The small edge Banker has over Player comes entirely from the hands where cards are drawn, because Banker gets to see Player's third card first. I broke that down in baccarat third card rules.

On naturals alone, Banker and Player are dead even.

Naturals and side bets

Several side bets care about naturals. In Dragon Bonus, a natural win pays 1 to 1 and a natural tie pushes. In the Big and Small bet, a natural is one of the ways a hand ends with exactly 4 cards.

The other side bets, Dragon 7 and Panda 8, need a third card, so they lose on every natural. More on those in Panda 8 vs Dragon 7.

Do naturals come in streaks?

They can look streaky, but a natural on the last hand doesn't make one more or less likely on the next. The only thing that matters is which cards are left. A shoe with lots of 8s, 9s and 0-value cards left will produce a few more naturals.

The scorecard doesn't track which cards are left, so it can't tell you which kind of shoe you're in.

Track the shoe in Baccarator

That's the gap Baccarator fills. Enter the cards after each hand, tap Calculate, and the app recalculates Banker, Player, Tie and side bet odds from what's actually left in the shoe.
