Which Cards Help Banker or Player? Baccarat Card Removal Effects

In baccarat, small cards help Banker and middle cards help Player. When aces, 2s, 3s and especially 4s leave the shoe, Banker's odds improve slightly. When 5s, 6s and 7s leave, Player's improve. But the effects are tiny: even if every one of the 32 fours were gone, Banker would still carry a 0.74% house edge.

That is why card counting barely touches the main bets. Here are the exact numbers.

How we measured the effect of each card

We started from a fresh 8-deck shoe, removed four cards of one value, the same as one deck's worth of that rank, and recalculated every possible hand exactly. Then we compared the house edge on Banker, Player and Tie with the full-shoe numbers of 1.06%, 1.24% and 14.36%.

This is called the effect of removal. It is the basic building block of any card counting system.

Which cards help Banker and which help Player

Chart: change in Banker house edge after removing four cards of each value. Removing A to 4 and 10-value cards lowers it, removing 5 to 9 raises it, with 4s and 6s having the largest effects
Change in house edge, in percentage points, after removing four cards of one value from a fresh 8-deck shoe (negative = better for that bet)
Banker edgePlayer edgeTie edge (8 to 1)
Remove four aces−0.018+0.018−0.05
Remove four 2s−0.021+0.022+0.09
Remove four 3s−0.025+0.026+0.07
Remove four 4s−0.046+0.047+0.11
Remove four 5s+0.033−0.033+0.10
Remove four 6s+0.046−0.046+0.46
Remove four 7s+0.034−0.033+0.43
Remove four 8s+0.020−0.022−0.29
Remove four 9s+0.010−0.010−0.19
Remove four 10-value cards−0.007+0.007−0.21

The pattern is clean. Removing A through 4 lowers Banker's edge, and removing 5 through 9 raises it. Player mirrors Banker almost exactly. The 4 and the 6 have the strongest pull in each direction.

Small cards leaving the shoe help Banker. Fives, sixes and sevens leaving help Player.

The reason goes back to Banker's drawing rule. Banker often stands on 4, 5 and 6 depending on Player's third card, so fewer small cards and more middle cards change how often those stands pay off.

Why counting cards barely moves Banker and Player

Look at the size of the numbers. Removing four 4s changes Banker's edge by less than 0.05 percentage points. To push Banker to a positive expected value you would need to strip out far more cards than any shoe ever loses.

We checked the extremes. With all 32 fours removed, Banker's house edge is still 0.74%. With all 32 sixes removed, Player's is still 0.77%.

Even removing every 4 in an 8-deck shoe leaves Banker as a losing bet.

The Tie reacts more, because it depends heavily on 6s and 7s: ties on 6 and 7 are the most common kind. Removing those makes Ties rarer, while removing 8s, 9s and 0-value cards makes them a little more likely. Side bets react far more than the main bets, as explained in how remaining cards change baccarat odds.

At the start of a fresh shoe every bet has a negative expected value. Only the cards left in the shoe can change that, and only briefly. Betting systems can't.

A whole deck's worth of one value shifts the main bets by less than 0.05 percentage points.

Let the app track the removed cards

Doing this arithmetic hand by hand isn't practical. Baccarator does it for the exact cards you enter.

After each hand you enter the cards and tap Calculate, and Baccarator recalculates the odds and expected value for Banker, Player, Tie, pairs and side bets from the cards still in the shoe. If a bet briefly turns positive, it shows a Kelly sizing suggestion. That only appears when expected value is positive, it is a long-run average, and the next hand can still lose. Positive moments are rare and short. You can choose 6 or 8 decks and practice with virtual chips, with no real money involved.
