Why Does Banker Have an Advantage in Baccarat?

Banker has an advantage in baccarat because it acts last. Player draws by a fixed rule that ignores Banker's cards, while Banker's rule looks at Player's third card before deciding. That extra information lifts Banker to 45.86% of hands against Player's 44.62%. If Banker drew exactly like Player, both sides would win 45.31% and the game would be perfectly even.

That is also why Banker pays less. The 5% commission exists to take most of that edge back.

What happens if Banker draws like Player

We ran the full 8-deck calculation twice. Once with the real rules, and once with Banker copying Player: draw on 0 to 5, stand on 6 or 7, never looking at Player's third card.

With the copied rule, Banker and Player both win 45.31% and Ties rise slightly to 9.38%. The two sides become mirror images. In that version a Banker bet with 5% commission would cost 2.27%, and Player would be a perfectly fair bet.

Banker's whole advantage comes from one thing: it gets to see Player's third card before it decides.

Which Banker decisions create the edge

The real Banker rule differs from the copied rule in only a handful of spots, almost all of them where Banker has 4 or 5 and stands instead of drawing. We flipped each of those decisions one at a time and measured how much of the gap it is responsible for.

Chart: share of Banker's advantage by drawing decision. Banker 5 standing against a Player third card of 0 accounts for 45.78%, Banker 4 against 0 for 11.43%, Banker 5 against 9 for 10.08%

Banker has 4 / 5, Player's third card is 88.81%

The single biggest piece is Banker standing on 5 when Player's third card is a 10 or face card. Player started with 0 to 5 and added nothing, so Player is often stuck low, and Banker's 5 is already ahead. Drawing there would only risk spoiling a good hand. That one decision is worth almost half of Banker's edge.

Banker on 4 or 5 standing against a Player third card of 8 or 9 matters for a similar reason. Those cards usually leave Player's total weak.

Almost half of Banker's edge comes from a single rule: stand on 5 when Player draws a 10 or face card.

The full chart is in baccarat third card rules, and what the gap is worth in money is in baccarat Banker vs Player.

If Banker drew by Player's rule, a Banker bet with commission would cost 2.27% and Player would break even.

Why the 5% commission doesn't erase it

Banker wins 50.68% of the hands that aren't Ties. To make Banker and Player cost exactly the same, the commission would have to be about 5.39%. At 5% the house leaves a sliver of the edge on the table, which is why Banker ends at a 1.06% house edge and Player at 1.24%.

None of this makes Banker a winning bet. At the start of a fresh shoe every bet has a negative expected value, and betting systems can't change that. Only the cards left in the shoe move the numbers.

Watch Banker's edge hand by hand

The drawing rules never change, but the cards behind them do.

After each hand you enter the cards and tap Calculate, and Baccarator recalculates the odds and expected value for Banker, Player, Tie, pairs and side bets from the cards still in the shoe. If a bet briefly turns positive, it shows a Kelly sizing suggestion. That only appears when expected value is positive, it is a long-run average, and the next hand can still lose. Positive moments are rare and short. You can choose 6 or 8 decks and practice with virtual chips, with no real money involved.

Because Banker draws last and its rule depends on Player's third card. If Banker drew by Player's fixed rule, both sides would win 45.31% of hands.

Why does Banker pay less in baccarat?

The 5% commission takes back most of Banker's edge from the drawing rules. Without it, a Banker bet would favor the player.
