Baccarat Bankroll: How Likely Are You to Go Broke?

Your baccarat bankroll mostly decides how long you can keep playing, not whether you come out ahead. Betting a flat 1 unit on Banker, a bankroll of 20 units has a 62.74% chance of going broke within 1,000 hands. With 50 units it is 16.09%, and with 100 units it drops to 0.22%. The house edge stays at 1.06% either way.

Here is how those numbers work, and what they can and can't tell you.

What risk of ruin means in baccarat

Risk of ruin is the chance your money runs out before you stop. "Broke" here means you can no longer cover the next bet. We counted it exactly, hand by hand: each Banker bet wins 0.95 units 45.86% of the time, loses 1 unit 44.62% of the time, and pushes on a Tie.

The bankroll is measured in betting units, so the math is the same whether one unit is 5 or 500.

Risk of ruin by bankroll size

The jump between 20 and 100 units is huge. A small bankroll doesn't lose more per hand on average. It just has less room for the normal swings, and swings in baccarat are large. Losing 6 Banker bets in a row happens in about 40% of shoes.

Bet size relative to your bankroll drives risk of ruin far more than which side you bet.

Why a bigger bankroll doesn't change the expected loss

The average cost per hand is the same for every bankroll: about 1.06% of what you bet on Banker. Over 1,000 hands of 1 unit, that is about 10.6 units on average. A bigger bankroll only means that cost arrives more slowly relative to what you have.

Keep playing long enough with flat bets and the chance of eventually going broke keeps climbing toward 100%. That is what a negative expected value does over time. At the start of a fresh shoe every bet has a negative expected value, and betting systems can't change that. Systems that raise bets after losses, like Martingale, actually push risk of ruin up. See baccarat betting systems for how that plays out.

Bankroll management changes how long the money lasts. It doesn't change who has the edge.

A simple way to think about a session

Decide the total you are willing to spend before you start, treat it as gone, and size each bet so that the session can survive a long losing streak. If 1 unit is 1/20 of that total, the table above shows how quickly things can end. These are just the numbers, not a plan for winning.

One more thing. If you notice you are chasing losses or spending more than you planned, stepping away and talking to someone matters more than any number here.

Track a shoe without real money

If you want to see how fast a bankroll moves without risking anything, the virtual chips in Baccarator are made for that.

After each hand you enter the cards and tap Calculate, and Baccarator recalculates the odds and expected value for Banker, Player, Tie, pairs and side bets from the cards still in the shoe. If a bet briefly turns positive, it shows a Kelly sizing suggestion. That only appears when expected value is positive, it is a long-run average, and the next hand can still lose. Positive moments are rare and short. You can choose 6 or 8 decks and practice with virtual chips, with no real money involved.
