Baccarat is a game of chance and poker is a game of skill. In baccarat you bet against the house, the drawing rules are fixed, and nothing you decide after betting affects the hand, so the house keeps its 1.06% edge on Banker and 1.24% on Player no matter who is playing. In poker you play against other people, and better decisions can win over many hands even after the house takes its cut.
Both involve cards and money on a table. That is about where the similarity ends.
Who you play against in baccarat and poker
In baccarat, "Banker" and "Player" are just the names of two hands. You pick one, the dealer runs the hand by the rules, and the house pays or collects. Everyone at the table can bet the same side.
In poker the other players are your opponents. The house doesn't care who wins a pot. It earns by taking a rake, a small share of each pot or a fee for the seat.
| Baccarat (Punto Banco) | Poker | |
|---|---|---|
| Who you play against | The house | Other players |
| Decisions in a hand | None after you bet; the drawing rules are fixed | Many: fold, call, raise, how much |
| How the house earns | House edge: 1.06% on Banker, 1.24% on Player | A rake or fee taken from the pots or the table |
| Can skill create a long-run edge? | No | Yes, against weaker opponents, after the rake |
| What decides one session | Mostly luck | Luck in the short run, skill over many hands |
Baccarat has no decisions after you bet. That is why skill can't beat the house edge.
Is baccarat luck or skill?
In the standard version, Punto Banco, it is luck. Whether Player or Banker draws a third card is decided by a chart, not by anyone at the table. The only version with a real choice is Chemin de Fer, where Player may decide on a 5, and even that choice is small. Our post on baccarat variants covers it.
Bet sizing feels like a skill, but it isn't one here. Betting systems change how results are spread out, not the average, as shown in baccarat betting systems.
At the start of a fresh shoe every bet has a negative expected value. Only the cards left in the shoe can change that, and only briefly.
Why poker is different
Poker has hidden information and choices on every street. A player who folds bad hands, bets good ones and reads opponents better will, over thousands of hands, take money from players who don't. Luck still dominates any single night, which is why weaker players sometimes win.
In poker the edge goes to the better player. In baccarat it goes to the house, every time.
The flip side is that poker can be expensive for a weak player. Losing to stronger opponents plus paying the rake can cost more than any baccarat main bet.
The house earns from baccarat through the rules themselves, and from poker through the rake.
Understand what you can and can't control
If baccarat is the game you play, the useful skill is understanding the numbers, not hunting for a system.
After each hand you enter the cards and tap Calculate, and Baccarator recalculates the odds and expected value for Banker, Player, Tie, pairs and side bets from the cards still in the shoe. If a bet briefly turns positive, it shows a Kelly sizing suggestion. That only appears when expected value is positive, it is a long-run average, and the next hand can still lose. Positive moments are rare and short. You can choose 6 or 8 decks and practice with virtual chips, with no real money involved.
